Since joining WDC in 2013, I’ve experienced incredible growth—both personally and professionally.
Professionally, I’ve taken on new roles - progressing from operator to supervisor to project manager and now construction manager, new projects, and countless opportunities to learn.
Personally, I’ve developed confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose.
What began as a small, tight-knit team has evolved into something truly remarkable, and I feel proud to have been part of this journey since the beginning.
At WDC, growth is part of the culture — driven by mentorship, training, and a genuine investment in every person’s journey, regardless of title or destination. What makes WDC special isn’t just our vision or mission — it’s how we live them. Our values are reflected in the way we show up, support each other, and stay focused on what matters.
The journey has been extraordinary, and I know there’s still so much ahead. I'm grateful to have been part of it from the beginning — and I’m excited to keep building what comes next.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WDC hire entry-level or inexperienced workers?
Yes! We regularly hire motivated individuals looking to start their civil construction career. While some positions require specific experience or qualifications, we have opportunities for entry-level labourers and are committed to developing our workforce. If you have a strong work ethic, commitment to safety, and willingness to learn, we encourage you to apply. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training and mentorship to help you build your career in civil construction.
What types of positions does WDC typically hire for?
We hire across a wide range of roles, including:
- Operators: Grader, excavator, dozer, scraper, roller, loader, skid steer operators and truck drivers
- Civil Construction: Labourers, leading hands, supervisors, concreters, and pipe layers
- Project Delivery: Project managers, project engineers, site engineers, surveyors, and quality officers
- Support Roles: Plant mechanics, administration staff, safety advisors, estimators, and accounts personnel
The specific positions available vary based on our current project workload and business needs.
Are positions permanent or casual?
The majority of our positions are permanent full-time roles, which reflects our commitment to providing stable employment for our workforce. We value long-term employees and have many team members who have been with us for 5-10+ years. Occasionally, we hire casual or contract workers for specific short-term projects, but we always prioritise offering permanent positions where possible.
Where are WDC projects located?
We're based in Chinchilla, Queensland, and most of our projects are located throughout the Surat Basin and Western Queensland region. We also work on projects across other parts of Queensland, depending on client requirements. Many positions are based from our Chinchilla depot with day trips to local project sites.
Do I need to relocate to Chinchilla?
For most permanent positions, living in or near Chinchilla is beneficial as it's our main depot and hub for operations. However, we understand relocation isn't always feasible. For remote projects, we offer FIFO (Fly-In-Fly-Out) or drive-in-drive-out arrangements. We're happy to discuss your location and circumstances during the interview process to find arrangements that work for both parties.
What qualifications and licenses do I need?
Requirements vary significantly by role. At a minimum, most positions require:
- Valid driver's license (appropriate class for the role)
- Construction Induction White Card
- High-risk work licenses (for operator roles—excavator, grader, dozer, etc.)
Additional requirements may include:
- Gas industry inductions (for gas sector projects)
- First aid certification
- Confined space, working at heights, or other specific tickets
- Trade qualifications (for trade roles)
- Tertiary qualifications (for engineering/management roles)
Don't let missing qualifications deter you from applying - we can discuss training pathways during the interview process.
I don't have all the required tickets. Will you still consider my application?
Absolutely. If you have relevant experience and a strong safety record but are missing certain tickets or certifications, we may still consider your application. We invest in training and development for the right people. During your interview, we'll discuss what qualifications are essential versus what we can support you to obtain.
Do you provide training and professional development?
Yes! We're committed to developing our workforce through:
- On-the-job training and mentorship
- Support for obtaining tickets and licenses
- Safety training and refresher courses
- Leadership development programs
- Technical skills training
- Industry certifications and compliance training
We believe in investing in our people and helping them build long-term careers with WDC.

- Week 2-3: Practical assessments (for operator roles) or second interviews if required
- Week 3-4: Reference checks and pre-employment requirements
- Week 4+: Job offer and induction scheduling
The full process from application to start date typically takes 2-4 weeks, though this can vary depending on the role and your availability.
Do you conduct pre-employment medical assessments?
Yes. All new employees must complete a pre-employment medical assessment with an approved medical provider. This ensures you're medically fit to perform the duties of your role safely. The assessment may include:
- General health check
- Hearing and vision tests
- Drug and alcohol screening
- Functional capacity assessment (for physical roles)
WDC covers the cost of these assessments.
What is your drug and alcohol policy?
Western Downs Civil maintains a drug and alcohol-free workplace to ensure the safety of all employees. Our policy includes:
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing (mandatory)
- Random testing throughout employment
- Post-incident testing if required
- For-cause testing if there are reasonable grounds
A positive result will disqualify you from employment or result in termination if you're already employed. We take this seriously as it's fundamental to workplace safety.
What happens during induction?
All new employees complete a comprehensive induction program that covers:
- WDC company overview and values
- Health, safety, and environmental policies
- Quality management systems
- Site-specific safety requirements
- Emergency procedures
- Equipment and PPE requirements
- Administrative processes (timesheets, leave, etc.)
Inductions typically take 1-2 days depending on the role, and you'll be paid for this time.

- Team members support each other on and off the job
- We give back to the local community

- Safety training and competency assessments
- Incident reporting and investigation procedures
- Zero tolerance for unsafe work practices
- Safety representatives on every project

Our goal is zero harm—everyone goes home safe, every day.
Are women encouraged to apply?
Absolutely! WDC is committed to diversity and inclusion. We actively encourage women to pursue careers in civil construction and provide a respectful, supportive work environment. We're working to increase female representation across all roles—from operators and labourers to engineers and management.
What is your approach to work-life balance?
We understand the importance of work-life balance and strive to provide:
- Predictable rosters where possible
- Adequate notice for schedule changes
- Fair distribution of overtime
- Respect for personal commitments
- FIFO rosters that include regular time home
- Supportive management who understand family commitments
While civil construction can be demanding, we work with our employees to maintain balance where possible.
What are the opportunities for career advancement?
WDC actively supports career progression. Many of our current supervisors and managers started in entry-level positions. Advancement opportunities include:
- Operator progression (from labourer to leading hand to supervisor)
- Technical progression (from site engineer to project manager)
- Trades progression (apprentice to tradesperson to supervisor)
- Specialisation in specific skills or equipment types
- Leadership roles as you gain experience
We prioritise promoting from within and developing our people for future opportunities.
Do you offer apprenticeships or traineeships?
We periodically offer apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities, particularly in:
- Civil construction
- Plant mechanics
- Business administration
- Engineering (cadetships)
Available programs depend on business needs and current workforce planning. Contact our recruitment team to discuss current or upcoming opportunities.
Can I transfer between different roles or projects?
Yes, internal mobility is encouraged. As you develop skills and interests in different areas, we'll work with you to explore opportunities across our various projects and service areas. Many employees have successfully transitioned between roles (e.g., from operator to supervisor, or from field work to project management).
